, the city of san jose decided to turn off 900 street lights throughout the day. there were some on roads and also in residential neighborhoods. the decision was made because of the budget. the city just reviewed their budget report and in that, it was decided that turning the lights on should be a priority. $44,000 has been set aside for the equipment and the maintenance of the lights. some residents had no idea the streets were darked on purpose. they reacted to the news this morning. >> they put the money to light up everything, it's good. it's good for people's safety. >> reporter: starting in march, approximately 225 street lights will be turned on each month which should improve public safety as well as the appearance of the roads. it's unknown which streets will city wants residents to be patient. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," hear from a woman who said she was forced to be in the dark early in the morning while she waited to get to work. we'll explain -- coming up. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 7:05. oakland police inves

a deadly shooting that happened just a few hours ago. they tell us a man was shot in the city's western edition. alex savidge is live there now. what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: we are getting very limited information from police this morning. that is because it's so early on in this investigation. a sergeant that was out here confirmed a man was shot and killed. he was found right over near this corner. near the intersection of hayes and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire in this area around 2:00 this morning. we'll show you that video. officers were out here for most of the morning. police tell us the victim was rushed to the hospital after suffering at least one gunshot wound. he died there from his injuries. homicide investigators searching for the shooter involved here. a sergeant told me they don't have a description on the person to put out. in just a couple minutes ago i talked to one woman who told me she heard one gunshot and saw this crime scene. >> it sounded like a gunshot and i knew somebody was dead. police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: so as

, the city of san francisco. mostly blue skies. a beautiful start for the day. a lot drier this morning than what you started yesterday morning. take a look at some of these wind gusts. most of us, they were not able to fill or see this, but the winds are blowing them 51 miles per hour. 21 at atlas peak and big rock and 20 miles per hour in the oakland hills. here closer to where we reside, 15, and 9 in santa rosa and oakland. so enough to stir some of that air out there. and in napa a lot warmer than santa rosa. take a look at when's happening here. they are 39 degrees with just a very light breeze and calm over at the airport. 47 in napa where i just showed you that breeze. and so again there is evidence there when you have that wind it will help to prevent that cold air from kind of sinking right there along the valley floor. 37 in concord. 37 in walnut creek. so a chillier start in many areas. you're 10 degrees cooler than yesterday morning. around the bay area, widespread, mid-40s to the lower 50s. so not bad outside your door. if i back up this way, look at the pattern here. so there's

a battle tonight during the city council this evening. according to the chronicle, the residents approved of the plan to build the new homes but they don't like the plans to bring down the magnolia trees and the chilean trees. earlier this year, the planning commission approved that plan but it's gone back and forth and gone back to appeal twice now and they are planning ong having that meeting later on this evening. there are 25 residents here banning together who say they want the trees to stay here. that's where we stand. pretty big lot. the planning commission meeting expected to begin tonight at about 7:00. we are live here in menlo park. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. >>> 7:05. breaking news.
